Excellence through belonging and growth

School Performance Report

School Performance Report

Our educational program is based on a core curriculum of English language arts, social studies, math, and science. In addition to these four core classes, our 7th and 8th grade students attend a PE/health/computer science rotation (one semester of PE, a quarter of computer science, and a quarter of health) and one elective class. Our elective courses are divided between music (chorus, band, orchestra) and non-music (art, leadership, robotics, tech arts, Tech Arts Enterprise, digital communications, and media arts). For our 6th-grade students, along with their core curriculum, they attend a semester of PE, a semester of wellness, and one elective class. Sixth-grade electives are orchestra, band, choir, computer science, and art.

Students are challenged through differentiated instruction and have a variety of math options through the geometry level. Conversely, students are also given multiple opportunities to obtain support for their learning through intervention classes, special education programs that are designed to meet the individual needs of the learners, and our advisory time. In each discipline we also integrate the use of technology. The widespread use of technology and multimedia in our CTE classes exceeds the basic curricular and technology goals of the Olympia School District and the Washington State CCSS.

Completed in 2006, additions and modernization of Washington Middle School increased student capacity from 588 to 800 students. Ten instructional stations were added and building infrastructure space expanded, including school administration, kitchen/serving area, student cafeteria, learning resource center, science facilities and computer technology facilities. Site improvements included storm water system upgrades, preservation of the east play field and expansion of staff and visitor parking.

  • MAP is a district assessment for K-10th-grade students that measures a student's developing skills through a series of questions that adapt to the child’s level of learning. Research on MAP indicates the results are highly accurate. The results help teachers measure growth and determine whether a student may need more support or more challenge.

  • When students finish their MAP Growth test , they receive a number called an RIT score for each area they are tested in (reading, language usage, math, or science). This score represents a student’s achievement level at any given moment and helps measure their academic growth over time. The RIT scale is a stable scale, like feet and inches, that accurately measures student performance, regardless of age, grades, or grade level. Like marking height on a growth chart, and being able to see how tall your child is at various points in time, you can also see how much they have grown between tests.

The higher the RIT score, the more achievement the student has in the subject. The student's percentile ranking and conditional growth percentile can show how much the student has achieved in comparison with their peers. You can also refer to the Comparative Data to Inform Instructional Decisions to understand how students are performing relative to other students in the same grade level according to our national norms.
